Learn The Basics of Magic Tricks

So you’ve decided that you want to learn magic tricks and you’re looking for a few beginner magic tricks to start you off on your path to greatness. There are plenty of easy tricks to learn from, but the real key is in mastering the basics of magic as an art form. Any magic trick you’ve ever seen, even the ones you’re lame uncle likes to show you, have been practiced by the performer beforehand. Even the simplest of tricks can be improved through practice and an understanding of the fundamentals that guide all magic tricks. So where to begin?

First things first, pick a trick. You’ll want to select an easy one to start, something that doesn’t have too many steps and you feel that you fully understand the directions it’s giving. Once you’ve settled on the trick, grab the tools you need for it (ie: coin, cards, gimmicks, etc…) and get ready to practice it over and over again. Grab a mirror and sit down in front of it so you can practice while watching your hands and movement exactly how an audience member would see you. If you get the trick down after a few tries, keep going, because there is always room for perfection on your style and movement that could be made before you move on.

Now that you’ve got a handle on it, simplify your movements. Chances are, your drawing too much attention to your hands and not luring the audiences attention away from what you’re doing. If you were to go attempt the trick and fumble, exposing exactly what you meant to hide, you’d probably end up fairly discouraged, which is never a good thing. So as you gain a better grasp on the situation, you’ll want to stand up and try it. There are few situations where you as the magician will find yourself sitting down performing the trick, so you’ll want to get use to the position your in.

Next, you’ll want to get a few more tricks under your belt. Keep them simple and within your reach so that you can easily transition from one to the other. You won’t make many friends into fans if you call everyone together for just one trick, so make sure your ready to entertain before you make the move. There’s no need to rush the process, so make sure that you have your set established and well practiced.

With a decent grasp on the concept behind it, you’re ready to perform your first trick. Try not to grab everyone together by announcing what you’re doing, because often times they’ll be more watchful of your actions. Instead, start the trick up to gather their attention and perform it as best you can. If you fumble and can get it back, keep going, but you don’t want to repeat a trick o.r to start over if too much has been revealed as you’re audience will see right through your act.
