Learn How To Roll A Coin On Your Knuckles

Rolling a coin is a great way to build up your manual dexterity for coin magic. Most of you have already seen someone take a coin from out of their pocket and roll it back and forth over their knuckles. This isn’t a skill that they learned over night unfortunately, but it is a great way to practice and build up your hand strength as you progress forward into coin magic. Grab a quarter or larger coin and sit down in front of this guide to practice. Once you know how to do the trick, keep a coin with you and simply practice whenever you are watching TV, reading a book, or browsing the internet and you’ll be on your way to mastering how to roll a coin in no time.

Lay your hand flat out on the table and notice the knuckles in your pointer finger. For this trick you can forget about the knuckle closest to your finger nail and simply focus on the other two. The knuckle closest to the base of your hand will be referred to as A and the middle knuckle will be referred to as B. If this is confusing to you, take a look at our post on coin trick terminology for your hand.

  • Hold your dominant hand up in front of you, palm down and wide open.
  • Keep the area between knuckle A and B facing straight up but curl your palm so that the back is facing directly towards you.
  • Bend all knuckle B’s down so that your fingers are parallel with your palm.
  • Now add the coin into the equation but holding it against the side of your pointer finger with your thumb between its knuckle A and B.
  • Shift the coin onto the area between knuckle A and B with your thumb while raising your middle finger above where the coin would fall.
  • Bring your middle finger down, catching the coin, as you lift up your pointer finger to help flip the coin onto the area between knuckle A and B on your middle finger.
  • Before the coin lays flat on your middle finger, raise up your ring finger and catch it just as you did with the middle finger.
  • Push up with the middle finger to help the coin lay flat between knuckle A and B on your ring finger.
  • Follow the steps below depending on your level of skill with coins.

For Beginners:

  • Catch the coin between your ring finger and pinky finger.
  • Prep your thumb to catch it underneath.
  • Let the coin slip down onto your thumb.
  • Bring the coin back to your index finger and repeat the process as many times as you would like.

For Advanced:

  • Catch the coin with your pinky finger and lift with your ring finger to land it between knuckles a and b on your pinky finger.
  • Raise your ring finger up to catch the side of the coin off of your pinky finger.
  • Reverse the rolling all the way back to your pointer finger.

When you are first starting out, it is highly recommended to use an American Half Dollar coin, Canadian Two Dollar Coin, Ten Dollar Mexican Pesos Coin, or a Poker Chip so that you can better grab it as it’s rolling.
