One thing that few people realize is that math and magic go hand in hand. Many of the tricks that you will learn, especially those you learn when you’re starting out, are all based on mathematics. If you’ve ever had trouble understanding how math can apply in the real world outside of geometry and grocery lists, then you should definitely take the time to learn tricks like this. Incredible Spelling isn’t going to take you awhile to master, but the true learning experience with this trick isn’t in mastering it, but in understanding how math actually provided you with a fun stunt to entertain your audience.

Effect:

Leaving the rest of the deck behind, you have taken out an entire suit of cards and explain to your audience that through using the power of spelling you can actually reveal all the cards of that suit to them in a specific order. As you start to show them exactly what you mean, you spell out each card in order from Ace to King but you’re not simply waiting their to reveal the card. Instead, each letter that doesn’t finish the word is actually going to the bottom of the deck. After spelling each card name, you flip over the card that you just spelled out from the top of your deck. To your audiences astonishment, you completely spell out each card in the deck and present them onto the table in perfect order just as you had told them you would.

Materials Required:

For this trick you will need one full deck of cards that have already been opened. You may follow the preparations and have all four suits set up properly or you may just enter the illusion with one suit ready to go.

Preparing For The Trick:

As this trick relies completely on math, you’ll need to make sure you properly organize the cards. Take that single suit of cards you’ve decided to work with and organize them in the following fashion from bottom to top:

1. Five
2. Nine
3. Ten
4. King
5. Jack
6. Two
7. Four
8. Six
9. Queen
10. Ace
11. Seven
12. Eight
13. Three

If your cards become out of order, the trick will fail completely. This set up has been established based on the number of letters in each card that you will be spelling to your audience to properly complete the trick.

What’s The Secret?:

Taking your prepared deck of cards in hand, you will begin to explain to your audience the power of spelling. As you start with Ace, you will place one card per letter at the bottom of the deck from the top. So “A”, “C”, “E”, puts three cards under the deck and allows you to turn the fourth card in your deck, the Ace, face up for your audience to see. If you continue in this fashion, you will eventually be left with just the King in your hand. But remember, having these cards out of order or incorrectly spelling a word can cost you the entire trick, so keep your cool!
